Completing the three days in the “Life of a Teacher” provided a realistic and meaningful insight into the full scope of teaching responsibilities beyond classroom instruction. These days highlighted the complex, multifaceted role that teachers perform and allowed me to apply my developing competencies in authentic contexts.
Managing the workload and pace of the three days required organization, flexibility, and emotional resilience. Each day was filled with a variety of tasks—from invigilation and teaching, to marking, supervising extracurricular activities, and assisting with administrative duties such as vaccination processes and community service projects. Although the days were long and demanding, I coped well by prioritizing tasks, remaining calm, and adapting to sudden changes such as substitution lessons or last-minute duties. These experiences strengthened my time-management skills and showed me the importance of maintaining professionalism and composure at all times.
During the first four weeks of my Teaching Experience, I often felt overwhelmed by the expectations of balancing lesson planning, teaching, classroom management, and administrative tasks. I was still gaining confidence in my teaching identity and learning how to navigate the school environment. However, in the last four weeks—and especially during these three days—I felt more settled, confident, and capable. I noticed a clear improvement in my ability to take initiative, engage learners meaningfully, and handle responsibilities independently. Tasks that once felt intimidating, such as invigilating, managing assemblies, or facilitating extra lessons, became manageable and even comfortable. This growth reflects how much I have developed professionally over the course of the TE.
Some of the most challenging activities included handling multiple administrative duties at once—such as coordinating the measles vaccination process, managing substitute lessons on short notice, and supervising large groups of learners during events. These tasks required strong communication, organizational skills, and the ability to give clear instructions to learners. I overcame these challenges by staying focused, asking mentors for clarity when needed, and approaching each task systematically. Classroom management during large assemblies and extracurricular events also tested my authority and presence, but I overcame this by using a firm, calm tone and consistently reinforcing expectations.
My self-evaluation results reflect a balanced and honest assessment of my competencies as a beginner teacher. I rated myself Proficient in most areas, including communication, content selection, classroom management, assessment, understanding diversity, and subject knowledge. In areas such as IT skills, curriculum unpacking, and identifying social/learning problems, I rated myself Competent, acknowledging that these are areas where I still have room to grow.
Overall, these ratings suggest that I am ready to enter the profession as a beginner teacher, while also being aware of the skills I must continue developing. I feel confident in my ability to teach effectively, build relationships with learners, plan lessons, assess learning, and manage a classroom. The combination of practical experience and reflective practice has prepared me for the responsibilities of the teaching profession.
When comparing my final competencies—with feedback from my mentor teacher and my own reflections—with the self-evaluation I completed at the beginning of my teaching experience, I can see significant growth. Initially, I was unsure about classroom management, pacing content, and facilitating learning independently. By the end of my TE, I had developed confidence, fluency in lesson delivery, and a stronger understanding of how to adapt my teaching to learner needs.
My mentor teacher’s final comments (based on your logs) reflect that I took initiative, handled diverse duties professionally, communicated well, and engaged effectively with learners inside and outside the classroom. This aligns with my improved self-evaluation, where I now rate myself more proficiently in key teaching competencies than before.
Overall, the three days in the “Life of a Teacher” reaffirmed my passion for teaching and demonstrated the complexity and fulfillment of the profession. I have grown personally and professionally and now feel prepared to enter the teaching profession with confidence, humility, and a commitment to ongoing learning. This experience has reinforced my readiness to take on the role of a beginner teacher and to continue developing into a reflective, competent, and compassionate educator.

The Beginning: Why I Chose Teaching
My journey began with a simple yet profound realization: I wanted to make a difference in the lives of young people. Growing up, I had several teachers who inspired me, igniting a passion for learning and curiosity. Their dedication and enthusiasm made me want to replicate that impact.
The Decision to Teach
Choosing to become a teacher was not an easy decision. I weighed my options, considering various career paths. However, the thought of shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning ultimately won out. I enrolled in a teacher education program, eager to learn the skills necessary to succeed in the classroom.
The Challenges of Teacher Training
Teacher training was both exhilarating and daunting. I encountered various challenges that tested my resolve and commitment to the profession.
Classroom Management
One of the most significant hurdles was mastering classroom management. During my first practicum, I quickly learned that maintaining order while fostering a positive learning environment is no small feat. I experimented with different strategies, from establishing clear expectations to using positive reinforcement. Over time, I developed a toolkit of techniques that helped me create a supportive atmosphere for my students.
Balancing Theory and Practice
Another challenge was bridging the gap between theory and practice. While my coursework provided a solid foundation, applying those concepts in real-life situations was often overwhelming. I found myself reflecting on my experiences, seeking feedback from mentors, and continuously adapting my approach. This iterative process was crucial in helping me grow as an educator.
The Joys of Teaching
Despite the challenges, teaching has brought me immense joy and fulfillment. Each day presents new opportunities to connect with students and inspire them to reach their potential.
Building Relationships
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is building relationships with students. I strive to create a welcoming environment where they feel valued and heard. By taking the time to understand their interests and backgrounds, I can tailor my lessons to engage them more effectively.
For example, I once had a student who struggled with reading. By incorporating topics he was passionate about, such as sports, into our reading sessions, I noticed a significant improvement in his engagement and confidence.
Celebrating Successes
Celebrating student successes, no matter how small, is another highlight of my teaching journey. Whether it’s a student mastering a difficult concept or showing improvement in their work, these moments remind me of the impact I can have. I make it a point to acknowledge their achievements, fostering a growth mindset and encouraging them to strive for more.
Continuous Learning and Growth
As an emerging teacher, I recognize that my journey is just beginning. The field of education is constantly evolving, and I am committed to lifelong learning.
Professional Development
Participating in professional development opportunities has been instrumental in my growth. Workshops, conferences, and online courses have provided me with new strategies and insights that I can implement in my classroom. For instance, I recently attended a workshop on differentiated instruction, which has helped me better meet the diverse needs of my students.
Seeking Feedback
I also value feedback from colleagues and mentors. Constructive criticism allows me to reflect on my practices and identify areas for improvement. By fostering a culture of collaboration, I can learn from others and share my experiences, ultimately benefiting my students.
Looking Ahead: My Aspirations as a Teacher
As I look to the future, I have several aspirations that guide my teaching philosophy and practice.
Embracing Technology
In today’s digital age, integrating technology into the classroom is essential. I aim to leverage various tools and resources to enhance student learning and engagement. For example, I plan to incorporate educational apps and online platforms that promote collaboration and creativity.
Fostering Inclusivity
Creating an inclusive classroom environment is another priority. I believe that every student deserves equal opportunities to succeed, regardless of their background or abilities. I will continue to educate myself on culturally responsive teaching practices and strive to create a space where all students feel valued and supported.
Inspiring Future Educators
Finally, I aspire to inspire future educators. I hope to share my experiences and insights with aspiring teachers, encouraging them to pursue their passion for education. By mentoring and supporting others, I can contribute to the growth of the teaching profession as a whole.
Conclusion: The Journey Continues
Reflecting on my journey as an emerging teacher, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences that have shaped me. The challenges I have faced have only strengthened my resolve to make a difference in the lives of my students. As I continue to grow and evolve in this profession, I remain committed to fostering a love for learning and inspiring the next generation.
Teaching is not just a job; it is a lifelong journey of discovery, growth, and connection. I invite you to join me on this path, as we work together to create a brighter future for our students.
